Gutter repair in Sacramento

A corner that drips onto the front step, a run that's dropped away from the fascia, a downspout that just backs up. Most Sacramento gutter problems are a $175–$700 repair, and the estimate will tell you plainly if yours isn't.

The repairs we do most in Sacramento

Leaking corners and end caps. The sealant in a mitered corner takes seven dry months of 100-degree afternoons every year, and after eight or ten summers it's cracked and pulling away from the metal. The first November storm finds the gap. We clean the joint back to bare aluminum, reseal with a polyurethane sealant that stays flexible through the summer, and replace the corner piece if it's corroded. Gutter leak repair Sacramento homeowners call about is mostly this job, and it's usually $175–$300.

Sagging runs. Spike-and-ferrule hangers on 1960s ranch homes in Arden-Arcade and Carmichael have been backing out of dry fascia for fifty years. The run drops in the middle, holds a puddle, grows mosquitoes in April and overflows in December. Sagging gutter repair Sacramento crews do most often is a re-hang on hidden screw hangers every 24 inches — 18 inches under a redwood or an oak that dumps a lot of weight — and resetting the pitch so water reaches the downspout. $175–$350 per run.

Downspouts. Crushed by a car, disconnected at the elbow, or simply too small. We replace the section and upsize to 3x4 while we're there, which roughly doubles capacity for about $40 more. Downspout repair Sacramento-wide has one local twist: on older homes in Land Park, East Sacramento and Curtis Park, the downspout usually drops into a buried clay or ABS drain that runs to the curb, and that line is often packed with roots and silt. A downspout that gushes at the top and won't drain is usually the pipe, not the gutter. We clear it or reroute the downspout above ground.

Runs pulled loose by wind or weight. Winter storm fronts come with wind, and a gutter already loose on one hanger peels back. Under a heavy oak, a gutter full of wet leaves and acorns can simply outweigh its hangers. We re-hang straight sections and replace kinked ones, matching profile and color.

Rotted fascia. The one you can't see from the ground. A corner that's been overflowing for a decade soaks the board behind it. We cut the rot back to sound wood, check the rafter tails, install primed lumber or PVC trim, and re-hang the gutter on the new board. Fascia and soffit repair Sacramento homeowners need is usually a board or two at a corner, not the whole house, and it's priced per foot on the same estimate.

Repair or replace?

Aluminum, under about 20 years old, problems in one or two places: repair. Sectional with a seam every ten feet, steel with rust bleeding through the paint, or a third or more of the runs with a problem: replace. On a 1970s house with the original gutters, a repair list that runs past $800 is usually a down payment on a system that's failing everywhere at once. We put both numbers on the estimate, and the whole decision is written out in repair or replacement in Sacramento. The gutter replacement page covers what a new system includes.

What a repair visit looks like

  1. Every run inspected from a ladder, fascia probed with a screwdriver, downspout outlets checked for flow.
  2. Each downspout traced to where the water goes — a splash block, a buried line, or the foundation. If it's the foundation, extensions go on the estimate; they're cheap and they matter on Sacramento clay.
  3. A written price. Repairs under $500 are usually done on the spot if you say yes.
  4. A hose test through the repaired section before we leave. In September that hose is the only rain you're going to get, so we use it.

If you want to narrow the problem down first, how to find a gutter leak covers the hose test, and why gutters overflow in Sacramento rain explains the overflow that isn't a leak.

What repair can't fix

A gutter half full of London plane leaves will overflow no matter how well it's sealed — that's cleaning, and under that tree it's twice a winter. A 5-inch gutter with one 2x3 downspout on a 55-foot run will overflow in an atmospheric river no matter what; that's a second downspout or a 6-inch run. And a gutter on a tile roof that was hung on the fascia behind the tile lip will always let water shoot past it — that's a re-hang with the right hangers, covered on the tile roof page.

Questions we get asked

How fast can you fix a leaking gutter?

Usually within the week, and faster in the rain season if water is landing on a foundation or a walkway. Tell us what's happening when you call. In November and December we hold time each day for active leaks and loose gutters so they don't wait behind scheduled installs.

Can a leaking gutter be repaired without replacing it?

Almost always on aluminum that's structurally sound — corners, end caps and seams are a clean-and-reseal job. The exception is old galvanized steel with rust pinholes along the bottom. Sealing those buys a season at best, and we'll tell you that rather than charge for it twice.

Why does my downspout back up even though the gutter is clean?

On older Sacramento homes, the downspout usually feeds a buried drain line that runs under the yard to the curb or a dry well. Fifty years of roots and silt plug it. We snake or jet the line, and if it's collapsed we bring the downspout above ground onto an extension instead of digging.

Do you repair gutters on two-story homes?

Yes. Two-story work runs about 15–25% more than the same repair on a single story for the ladder and safety setup. We use standoffs so the ladder never rests on the gutter, which is how a lot of two-story gutters get crushed in the first place.
